Scott Glassman | How and Why to Make Positive Psychology Part of Your Daily Life

“We can begin to develop habits of positive thinking, feeling and doing, which become more accessible because we're using them more often. In turn, the negative connections become less reinforced, and they weaken in our neural networks.” — Scott Glassman

Learning to apply positive psychology doesn’t mean changing your mindset overnight. Instead, Scott Glassman, Psy.D., recommends starting your journey into prioritizing positivity with small, manageable steps.

Dr. Glassman worked with Martin Seligman, Ph.D., one of the founding fathers of positive psychology, in Dr. Seligman’s lab at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Glassman has spent the last eight years at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he created the A Happier You program

Over seven sessions, patients at the college's health center were taught how to build a self care practice and techniques for managing stress, based on tenets of positive psychology. The college leaders were so happy with the results, they made A Happier You available to staff, faculty and students.

To reach even more people, Glassman has also turned the program into a book: A Happier You: A Seven-Week Program to Transform Negative Thinking into Positivity and Resilience

In this episode of Leading with Genuine Care, Glassman explains why gratitude helps us feel connected to the world even when we’re alone, and how to counter the human tendency towards the negative by creating an upward spiral.

In this conversation, you’ll learn:

  • Why little actions can improve our happiness

  • How and why to take your happiness temperature

  • The importance of setting up your day with a strong foundation

  • Why we tend to pay attention to what's going wrong

  • Why positive psychology doesn’t mean always being happy

  • Why we sometimes don't make changes in our lives

  • Why expressing gratitude feels so good

  • And so much more!
